ARCHITECTURE
Henk Klunder of Klunder Architects drew for the exterior, and Jan des Bouvrie, who also presented the villa in his TV WoonMagazine programme, was brought in for the interior.

LOCATION
This magnificent property is not just anywhere. The location is at least as unique as the villa itself: a stone's throw from the Rotterdamsche Manege (home of the annual CHIO and namesake of the lane) and the Kralingse bos, a unique 2-hectare forest in the heart of Rotterdam, with the Kralingse plas surrounded by tasteful Horeca such as De Tuin, The Boathouse, De Schone Lei and Minang Kabau.

But also within walking distance: right upstairs gym at Basic Fit and downstairs delicious food at Gym & Gin. Or turn left to Osteria Vicini or Café Stobbe, both popular meeting places in Kralingen.

For advanced athletes, there is Victoria where tennis and hockey are played and the public Golf Club Kralingen (both 500 metres to the right).

And if the car has to be taken: within three minutes you are on the Rotterdam Ring Road.

ANEKDOTE FROM THE OWNER
May 1983. Drink time in the bar of the Boomerang, Goudsesingel, Rotterdam

In conversation are Fred Kolsteeg, founder of advertising agency ARA (1975) and Henk Klunder, founder of Klunder Architects (1978). Two Rotterdam firms.

'Henk, I would like to come and live in Rotterdam, but in a Miami-style villa. White with glass in the colour of the Caribbean sea. Where you can see the stars in front of the fireplace. And the light in the dome and under the house makes you feel like you're in a UFO taking off.'

'Fred, I actually only design residential towers like the Weenatoren and the Boompjes. No residential houses. But if you find the place, I'll design your house. Appie, can we have another round?'

That spot became Manegelaantje in stately Kralingen.

At the time, it was felt that such a designer villa did not fit in this posh neighbourhood at all.

Except Jan des Bouvrie, who filmed the Hollywood villa for his TV programme TV Woonmagazine as a Dream House.
